Remember this fun experiment from science class? If you don’t recall which ingredients you used to make your own lava then don’t worry, because we’re here to help. See our tutorial and build a spectacular volcano together. And please remember to take a step back when your spewing volcano goes out with a bang!
By the way, did you know that the word ‘volcano’ originates from Vulcan, the Roman god of fire?
Your DIY ingredients: Strong card, Scissors, Plastic bottle, Pencil, Paint brush, Tape, Protective sheet for the table, Acrylic paint (black and white), Craft stick, Stapler, Jug
For the lava mixture: 1 tbsp washing-up liquid, 2 tbsp water, 1 tbsp red food colouring, 2 tbsp water, 1 tbsp bicarbonate of soda
1. Place the neck of the bottle in the middle of your large cardboard base and draw a circle around it.
.
2. Cut out the circle.
3. Fold the paper around the bottle neck so it stands out like a stiff collar.
4. Staple the paper together at the top and bottom and close it with tape in the middle. Take your scissors and cut the paper so it gets a round volcano shape.
5. Take the paint brush and paint your volcano black.
Ta-da! Now it’s time to prepare the lava. Mix 1 tbsp washing-up liquid, 2 tbsp water, ½ cup vinegar and 1 tbsp red food colouring in a jug.
6. Put 1 tbsp bicarbonate of soda onto the craft stick and spread it into the volcano.
7. Pour the lava mixture into the hole and watch the volcano erupt!
You made it!
