DIY: Transforming autumn leaves into spooky garland
Autumn, with its crisp air and vibrant leaves, sets the perfect stage for the spookiest time of the year - Halloween. As the trees shed their colourful bounty, why not harness this natural beauty for some festive decorations? Let's dive into a DIY project that's both cheap and eerily enchanting.
Why use autumn leaves for Halloween decorations?
There's a certain magic in using what nature provides. Not only is it eco-friendly and cost-effective, but the natural hues and shapes of autumn leaves also offer a unique canvas for our spooky creations. Plus, there's a charm in knowing that no two leaves, and thus no two decorations, will be exactly alike.
What you’ll need:
Step 1:
Your first step is a delightful one: A walk in nature. As you wander, look for leaves that are:
- Large and relatively flat.
- Free from blemishes, holes, or insects.

Step 2:
Once you've got your collection, you should gently clean them with a damp cloth to remove any dirt. Then let them dry completely. To preserve their shape and colour, consider pressing them between the pages of a heavy book for a day or two.
Step 3:
Let's get to the fun:
- For ghost leaves: Paint your chosen leaf entirely white and let it dry. Once dried, use a black marker to draw two ovals for the eyes and a larger oval for its mouth.
- For bat leaves: Paint another leaf black and let it dry. With a white marker, draw two small circles for the eyes. Optionally, add fangs or wings.
- For Jack'o Lantern leaves: On fiery red or orange leaves, use a black marker or paint to craft the classic Jack'o Lantern face with triangular eyes, a nose, and a jagged mouth.
With these steps, you'll have a collection of spooky leaves ready to haunt your home!

Step 4:
Once dry, it's time to assemble your spooky leaves garland.
Decide on the order of your leaves. Use a needle to thread the string through the top of each leaf or punch a hole at the top and thread them. Hang your garland across doorways, windows, or walls.
Other creative ideas
Window decor: Use double-sided tape to stick individual leaves onto windows for a spooky silhouette effect.
Table centrepieces: Place a collection of decorated leaves in the centre of your table, perhaps with some candles.
Door wreaths: Intertwine your leaves with some twigs and form a creepy-cute wreath for your front door.
Embracing the DIY spirit not only adds a personal touch to your Halloween decorations but also creates memories in the making. As you craft, you're not just making decor; you're making stories to share. So, this Halloween, let nature be your muse and let your creativity run wild. Happy haunting!
